Debix

August 23rd, 2008 at 03:40 pm

I was one of the many people in Ohio that was at risk sometime last year when a government laptop was stolen that had information about me on it. The state of Ohio couldn't recover the laptop and because they were not sure if the people's info was safe from identity theft, they provided me with a free year od Debix credit card protection. I didn't do much with the protection but it was nice to have under the circumstances.
It seems to be a good service although normally I would have never even tried it.
Now my year is about up and Debix as a nice gesture provided me with an extra free month. But now they sent me a letter saying I can re-new the service if I want to for about 25 bucks a year.
It seems to be a great service but I don't know if I really need it. Do any of you think its something that would be smart to keep? The price seems very reasonable but I don't know if its best to keep it or not.

If you didn't want to spend the money, I think you'd be fairly safe if you just pulled your credit report each year and examined it closely for anything inaccurate or unusual, which would suggest someone else was using a credit card account or something.

You can get 1 free credit report a year from any one of the 3 credit reporting bureaus. By ordering 1 from each bureau (Equifax, Experian and TransUnion) and staggering your requests throughout the year, you can check your credit report every 4 months, instead of just once a year, if you're worried about possible ID theft down the road. (It's a good idea to do this anyway.)

Like, order the one from Equifax in January. Then in April/May, order the 1 from Experian. In September, get the 1 from TransUnion. And then start all over again with Experian in January.

Each of these has a website and directions for how to check your credit report online.

Good idea Fern. I might try that. I have sent for my free credit reports once. And I was able to send for my score once for free. My rating was excellent so I never bothered with it again.
I need to try it the way you mentioned with staggering it.
    Thanks.
